Friday, August 8

The City of Richland Center will begin repaving the municipal parking lot at Church and East Court Streets Friday, August 8. Intermittent “No Parking” signs will be posted throughout the area for approximately 14 days during reconstruction. Please plan accordingly and watch for posted signage.

SSM Health St. Clare Hospital-Baraboo will be holding an ImpactLife Blood Drive Friday, August 8, from Noon until 3:00, in the hospital’s Ringling Room. The 2025 Walk with GRACE will be held Friday night at Krouskop Park in Richland Center. The opening ceremony will be held at 6:00 with the luminary ceremony at 9:00. All are invited to attend to support those who are battling cancer and remember those who lost the fight. Food and refreshments will be available beginning at 4:00.

A Red Cross Blood Drive will be held Saturday, August 9, from 8:00 to Noon at the Grove Regional Community Center in Mazomanie. Appointments are preferred by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or go online to redcrossblood.org.

The Boaz Lions Club will be holding a brat stand, Saturday, August 9 from 10:30 until 1:00, at Walsh’s ACE Hardware in Richland Center. The menu includes brats, hotdogs, chili dogs, water and soda.

Critters and Coffee will be held at the Brewer Library Parking Lot on Saturday, August 9, starting at 11:00. Stop by to see critters from local 4-H, learn more about Ocooch Mountain Humane Society, enjoy a cup of coffee from Kelly’s Coffee Mobile station, or a cool cup of lemonade made by Friends of the Library!

The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus, sponsored by Southwest Partners Inc., will be at North Park in Richland Center Sunday and Monday, August 10 & 11. There will be two shows each day. Performances will be Sunday at 2:00 & 4:30 and Monday at 5:00 & 7:30. Monday, August 11

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Vernon County offers a free social group for individuals with early-stage dementia. The social group meets on the second and last Mondays of the month from 10:00 to 11:30 at the McIntosh Memorial Library conference room in Viroqua. The social group provides an opportunity to meet other people on a similar journey and share life stories with each other. Spouses, adult children, and friends are encouraged to join the group, too. The Boscobel Pool Fundraising Committee will sponsor a Picnic in the Park for the Pool the second Monday of each month through September. You are invited to enjoy hamburgers, brats, and hotdogs from 4:00 to 7:00 at Kronshage Park in the Gene Larsen Shelter.

Experience a classic movie at the Hillside Theater at Taliesin. First shown at Taliesin in 1952, Strangers on a Train, a classic suspense tale, widely considered one of Alfred Hitchcock’s best works, will be shown Monday, August 11, at 7:00. The Richland Hospital and Clinics invites families to beat the heat and enjoy a free pool day at the Spring Green Municipal Pool Tuesday, August 12. Bring your sunscreen, towels, and smiles for a day of fun in the sun.

The Richland County 4-H is starting a new Gardening Program, in partnership with the Richland County Foundation at the Smart Farm. The Youth Gardening Program is open to 4-H members and youth in the community. Meetings will be held the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Richland County Foundation Smart Farm, 24970 Smart Lane, Richland Center.

Concessions will be available in the Killian Meyer Building during Church League Softball with proceeds going towards construction of dugouts at Krouskop Park. The concessions will be open from approximately 6:00 to 9:00 each game night until further notice.

Adventureland sponsored by Richland County 4-H, will be held at the Cazenovia Memorial Park on Wednesday, August 13 from 10:30 until Noon. Youth will dive into the science of bubbles, craft their own bird feeders, and explore the fascinating process of pollination. The program is free no registration is required. If you’re the main caregiver of a person living with dementia, you can join Agrace for a new education series, Learning to Live with Dementia. The classes are taught by Agrace staff who have experience caring for people who have dementia. Two classes on what changes to expect will be held. The first session, titled “Communication,” will be held Wednesday, August 13, from Noon to 1:00. The second session, “Personality and Behavior Changes,” will be held Monday, August 25, from Noon to 1:00. Each class is $20, and you may attend online using Microsoft Teams. St. John’s Lutheran Church will host a Summer Social dinner Wednesday, August 13, from 4:30 until 7:00. Hot turkey and hot pork sandwiches, baked beans, coleslaw, watermelon, as well as homemade pies and ice cream will be served. All are welcome to attend. Cost of a dinner is $10 for those ages 6 and older. 5 and under eat for free.

Thursday, August 14

The Vernon County Health Department offers “Wellness Screenings” the second Thursday of the month from 7:30 to 10:30. The screening includes cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as an assessment of blood pressure and discussion of risk factors for heart disease. A $10 donation is requested, but not required. Friday, August 15

During the month of August the Ocooch Mountain Humane Society will be participating in Clear the Shelters, an event hosted by NBC to help get shelter pets into loving homes.

A Fundraiser RUMMAGE SALE will be hosted by the Richland County Right to Life, LLC group at the Park Street Christian Church on Friday, August 15 from 9:00 until 6:00 and Saturday, August 16 from 9:00 until 1:00. Kokoro Workshop: A Holistic Approach to Well-being will be held from 12:30 Friday through 5:00 Sunday, August 15-17, at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center for ages 18 and over. Join Professor Kimiko Gunji and curator Tim Gruner at Taliesin for a weekend exploring the Japanese concept of Kokoro. Experience authentic activities like tea ceremonies in Frank Lloyd Wright’s living room, calligraphy sessions in his drafting studio, and outdoor mindfulness exercises. The Southwest WI Pullers Hub City Truck & Tractor Pull will be held Friday, August 15, starting at 6:30, at Mick Memorial Park in Hub City. Cost of admission is $5 and free for kids 12 & under. Hot homemade food and cold drinks will be available at the event.

Saturday, August 16

The Paddle Festival will be held in Richland Center Saturday and Sunday, August 16 and 17. One of the main highlights of the weekend is the Run, Walk, and Parade event, where all are encouraged to dress in their favorite music genre and era. For those who prefer two wheels, there will be bike rides that wind through the countryside. And if you’re feeling adventurous, kayaking events will be held to explore the waterways. There will also be live entertainment throughout the weekend with local and regional artists; and there will be an art, wine, and sporting goods auction.

Free milk and cheese is available the third Saturday of each month from 9:30 until gone at Park Street Christian Church. Use the Seminary Street entrance.

Caz Burgers in the Park will be held Saturday, August 16, from 11:00 to 3:00 at Cazenovia Memorial Park. Enjoy hand-pattied burgers and fries as well as pies for dessert. Happy hour will be held from 11:00 to Noon and a bean bag tournament will be held at Noon. All proceeds will go to Auxiliary Post 491 for scholarships, youth, and community projects.

There will be a Poolside Block Party Saturday, August 16, from 11:00 until 5:00, on Court Street in Richland Center. The community event will feature food, ice cream trucks and live music performances. There will also be a dunk tank with proceeds going to Richland Area Rescue, animals to interact with, local vendors and games with prizes.

The Richland Singers Community Choir will host a concert titled “When You Believe” Saturday, August 16, at 4:00 in the Richland Center High School Auditorium. Admission is free.

Sunday August 17

First Lutheran Church in Lone Rock will host Cowboy Church featuring Monty Berger Sunday, August 17, at 8:30. Everyone is welcome.

Students Standing Strong will host a Brat Stand Sunday, August 17, from 11:00 to 2:00 in the Richland Community Center parking lot. All proceeds and donations will support the Richland Community Food Pantry, helping local families in need. Guests are encouraged to “pay” for their meal with either canned goods or a monetary donation. Students Standing Strong (S3) is a student-driven organization focused on faith, leadership, and positive community involvement. Through service, fellowship, and outreach, S3 empowers students to be difference-makers in their schools and neighborhoods.

An Ice Cream Social will be held Sunday, August 17, from 1:00 until 4:00, at Harrisburg School, Highway B west of Plain. Sundaes, Pie and Ice Cream will be served. Come and explore the school and museum.

Monday, August 18

The Avoca-Highland American Legion Auxiliary Unit 335 will host a pork loin dinner the third Monday of each month from 4:00 to 7:00, or until gone, through September at the Avoca Village Hall (the old school in Avoca). The cost of the meal is $10.

A UW Extension Cow-Calf Workshop is slated in Gays Mills. Selecting heifers for potential replacements, winter feeding management, fall weed management and truck and trailer maintenance will be the timely topics as summer winds down and we move into fall. The workshop will be held Thursday, August 28, at the Gays Mills Community Center. Check-in and snacks will begin at 5:30 and the workshop will wrap up at approximately 8:00. There is no charge to attend the workshop as sponsorship is provided by the Coulee Region Shippers Association. Registration is strongly encouraged to help with materials and food planning.

The Richland Center Lions will be hosting a monthly evening at the Fairgounds to sell concessions the third Thursday of each month from 5:00 to 8:00 through September. The final night will be Thursday, October 9. Car enthusiasts are invited to bring their cars to showcase.

Team LadyPenguins Fundraising will host an adventure race in Cassville Saturday, August 23. Headquartered at Riverside Park, the race will feature Nelson Dewey State Park and paddling on the Mississippi River. This charity organization is offering 7 hour and 14 hour challenges that are as exhilarating as they are rewarding. Participants can expect a variety of outdoor activities across diverse terrain. Grown & Gather – Eat the Weeds will be held Saturday, August 23, from 9:30 to 11:30. Join Taliesin Preservation’s Kitchen Gardener, Abbie Lehman, to learn what weeds in your garden are delicious and nutritious. Learn about companion planting and how some weeds can actually benefit your garden when managed properly. The importance of understanding native vs invasive weeds, and how our gardening affects the greater ecosystem will also be discussed. Tour the Kitchen Garden at Taliesin and have the opportunity to sample the weeds and the garden produce. Bring a tote bag or basket to take home some garden goodies. River Valley Community Gardens will be holding a brat sale fundraiser Saturday August 23, from 10:00 until 2:00 at Prem Meats in Spring Green. All proceed go towards supporting the Gardens.

A benefit for Robert Jr. “Bob” Persinger will be held Sunday, August 24, from Noon to 5:00 at Wisconsin Riverside Banquet Hall in Spring Green. The event includes food, live music, a 50/50 raffle, silent auction, and bake sale.

A school supply drive is being held through Monday, August 25, at the Edward Jones office in Richland Center. You can drop off donated school supplies Monday through Friday from 8:00 until 3:00.

Tuesday, August 26

The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eagle Country, Richland County office is offering the Richland Center Caregiver Support Group at the Woodman Senior Center on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM. This group offers a chance to connect with local experts, family members and care partners who may be experiencing similar circumstances. Friday, August 29

The 44th Annual Little Britches Showmanship will be held at the Richland County Fair on Sunday, September 7, at 11:00 in the Show Barn. Little Britches is open to all youth with a minimum age of three up to a maximum age of eight or second grade as of January 1, 2025, who would not be eligible for regular 4-H membership, may participate.
The animals must be born on or after March 1, 2025 and includes dairy and livestock animals such as a dairy calf, goat, lamb, rabbits, and poultry. All animals must be on a lead line. Animals being brought onto the fairgrounds must have a Vet-Check-In-Sheet which can be obtained from the Richland County Fair Office by calling 608-647-6859, or the Extension Office at 608-647-6148. All animals shown in the Little Britches Show must comply with the animal health requirements and identification for its respective species listed in the Richland County Fair premium book. A copy of the requirements can be obtained from the Richland County Extension Office. Participants must sign up by calling the Extension Richland County Office at 608-647-6148 by Friday, August 29.

Monday, September 1

The 55th reunion of the RCHS Class of 1970 will be held Saturday, September 13, from Noon to 4:00 at the Phoenix Center in Richland Center. A buffet lunch, with cash bar, will be provided at a cost of $10 per person. After lunch, a class photo will be taken. Deceased classmates will be remembered and the 22 living and deceased veterans from the class will be honored. The program will be followed by a trivia challenge for those who wish to participate. The Boaz Lions Club invites you to tour the Mastedon Building Sunday, September 7. The building will be open from 1:00 to 3:00. There will also be a food stand.

Kickapoo Cowboy Church is held at 6:00 on the first Sunday of the month, April through December, at the Old Oak Inn in Soldiers Grove.

Monday, September 8

Experience a classic movie at Taliesin Monday, September 8, at 7:00. Alfred Hitchcock’s, North by Northwest, tells the tale of an innocent man mistaken for a spy. Executive Roger Thornhill has the misfortune of standing just as the name “George Kaplan”” is paged, starting a lethal case of mistaken identity and a nonstop game of cat and mouse. This film is presented in partnership with the River Valley Film Club and American Players Theatre. Tickets can be purchased online at taliesinpreservation.org/events.

Saturday, September 13

Taliesin Preservation will be hosting Grow and Gather: Fall Foraging on Saturday, September 13 from 9:30 until 12:30. Come explore Phoebe Point Trail at Taliesin and learn how to forage with Taliesin Preservation’s Kitchen Gardener, Abbie Lehman. Foraging basics will be discussed at the base of the trail. Then those in attendance will embark on a moderate 1.1 mile loop through Phoebe Point to put new knowledge to the test, identifying common summer wild edibles along the way. Wright’s connection to the Driftless, and how it inspired a culture at Taliesin of working with and learning within the natural environment. will also be discussed. Participants of all abilities, including those who may not be able to undertake the 1.1 mile hike, are welcome.

Miss Purdy and Nestor will be out accompanied by their donkey crew, members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 13 and American legion Post 13 Friday, September 19, at Our House at 10:00. Visit with the residents, staff, and of course Miss Purdy and Nestor at any of the stops.

Saturday, September 20

The Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce presents Oktoberfest at Circus World Saturday, September 20. Fest Masters Pete and Rebecca Oettinger will open the festivities by tapping the golden keg at 3:30. That’ll be the cue for the BaraBrew WisconSing Beer Choir to start singing. They’re the opening act for Griffy Jim and the Polka Dots, who take center stage at the hippodrome from 4:00 to 6:00. A costume contest and other games will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 as this year’s headline act, Chicago dance/rock band Electro Retro, prepares to perform from 7:00 to 9:00. Knights of Columbus Council 3492 will be hosting bingo on Saturday, September 27 starting at 6:30 at the Richland Center Community Center. The progressive blackout jackpot will be $4,225 + 50% of net sales in 59 calls or less.

Wednesday, October 1

The Highground in Neilsville will host its third annual military couples retreat, “Operation Re-Connect,” Friday through Sunday, October 17-19. The Highground will welcome five couples, veterans and their spouses or partners, regardless of where they are in their relationship journey to participate in a weekend of interactive and insightful activities. Advance retreat reservation is required by October 1. Upon reservation, lodging arrangements will be made, and a $50 reservation fee is required. This fee will be refunded upon the couple’s arrival at the retreat. All lodging, meals, and materials are provided; however, transportation to and from the retreat is the responsibility of the participants.
